“. . . Madelyn’s story includes anecdotes about the difficulty of obtaining proper health care, the long-term realities of illness and aging, and the transcendent powers of faith, humor, and family. Details about surviving the day-to-day labors of physical caregiving as well as a big picture about what truly matters in life make Letters from Madelyn an invaluable read, cover to cover, especially for anyone coping with a loved one’s slow deterioration."

“Your message enhanced the values we share about the importance of human life and confirmed the importance of our personal attitudes in helping others.  You are a gifted writer and speaker who shows purposefulness in your work and life.  We will look for other ways to bring your message to those involved in furthering the mission of Silverton Hospital.”

“Dear Elaine, You were so wonderful to work with and so kind and understanding. You showed such compassion and kindness not only to me but to everyone you came into contact with over the two days that you were here. I was truly impressed and inspired. The people who attended your presentation had high praises for you. They each felt touched and inspired by the ideas you had in helping them learn to cope with their role as caregivers, and they all related to you in ways of their own.

Elaine, you are a natural speaker for caregivers and if I can ever help you by vouching for your abilities, please just let me know.”

Elaine’s workshop “Surviving and Growing Through Caregiving” covered many key points that are facing millions of Americans today including assistance of aging spouses, parents and other dependents. Her facilitation of the discussion was very valuable for all in attendance. She is a poised and compassionate professional, with a powerful and timely message. On behalf of Coconino Community College, we recommend her heartily for other talks and classes.

Elaine Sanchez brings experience and a wonderful perspective to the difficult task of caregiving.  Her Caregiver's Survival Guide is packed with tools for lifting-up the caregiver, helping them find dignity, a new perspective, and even humor as they go about their daily tasks.  We look forward to her return to Sedona and the presentation of another workshop.

I recently attended your workshop on eldercare.  I was impressed by your ability to hold the audience's attention by speaking from the heart about your mother’s experiences.  Along with your authentic knowledge concerning human nature, your also gave extremely practical tips on how caregivers can take care of themselves.  You reinforced for me the knowledge that if I cannot nurture myself, I will not be able to practice attentive loving-kindness towards those who are sick and may be dying.

“What an incredible story you weave. I also realized how important our disability planning truly can be for our clients and their loved ones, and how important it is to address it.”

What others are saying about
Letters from Madelyn.

“Wow!  What a woman!  This is a moving story, very human, very real, very wise, very uplifting. Madelyn had a great sense of humor, but the most amazing thing was her strength and ability to grow spiritually in the face of adversity.  Many people would feel sorry for themselves, but Madelyn was able to see good in the face of so much that was pretty awful.

She often prayed that God would take her husband, but if not, that God would give her the strength to carry on. She focused on remembering and treasuring the good times, not seeing her husband only as he was after suffering a debilitating stroke. Her view of God is beautiful, and it says as much or more about her than it does about God.

This is a lovely tribute by a daughter to her mother.  Would that we all could be so fortunate!”

The Very Reverend Hollinshead T. Knight

I felt as though I knew Madelyn. Reading the book, I would find my mom, an aunt and others that I’ve known.  Sometimes I found myself.  I enjoyed it so much; I didn’t want it to end.  It’s the kind of book I will read more than once.  Madelyn was a great person. I would have loved to have known her and been one of her friends.

I feel privileged at meeting Madelyn through her letters and envy those who knew her in person. “Letters from Madelyn” is one of the most inspiring, yet down-to-earth, books I have come across in my 36 years as an academic librarian – as well as being laugh-out-loud funny!  What a remarkable woman!

Charlie Weyant, Retired

Madelyn speaks her mind with wit and wisdom.  As a caregiver, she is strong, upbeat and practical.  As a person, she is spiritual and open to new ideas.  There is much to learn about life from this amazing woman.  I wish I could have met her!

Laughing through my tears, I was reassured that even in the midst of the worst end-of-life issues there is an opportunity for deepening spiritual awareness, personal growth, and peace.  Madelyn makes us believe that we, too, can rejoice in life, even to the end of our days.

Jenan Rook Brandt, Retired Teacher

Madelyn’s letters captivated us and kept us up way too late into the night.  Both my husband and I commented on her progressive ideas, spiritual insights and her constant questioning.  She seemed to be able to rebound and reinvent herself despite her day to day existence.  The book has so much power to it, and it really makes one think about the future and health and aging (and our marriage vows!).  All I want to do now is exercise and stay healthy.

One of our best programs.  Your mother, your and her energy, the humor, the inspiration, the reality were not lost on this group.  You were a blessing to us all.  Thank you so much.
